Saying Goodbye to your Pet
Our staff will offer you support and respect and treat your much loved pet with the utmost of kindness. We will never force a decision onto our clients but will guide them as to what is in the best interest of their animal.
We understand that saying goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the most difficult moments you will ever experience. Pets are not just animals - they’re family. They’ve shared your home, your routine, and your heart, and when the time comes to let them go, it can be overwhelming.
At Great Western Animal Hospital, we’re here to support you through every step of this journey with compassion, respect, and kindness.
Support and guidance
We know that this is an emotional and deeply personal decision. Our team will never pressure you, but we will gently guide you on what is in the best interest of your pet’s quality of life. We will always treat your pet with the utmost care and dignity.
Euthanasia - a peaceful goodbye
If the decision is made to say goodbye, we ensure that this is done gently and painlessly. You are welcome to stay with your pet throughout the procedure or say your goodbyes beforehand - whatever feels most right for you.
The procedure can be carried out inside the clinic or in our backyard (pending weather).
If you wish to have an at-home Euthanasia please reach out to us and we can assist you arranging this.
Cremation and aftercare
We offer individual and with friends cremation options, depending on your wishes:
Individual cremation - your pet will be cremated on their own, and their ashes can be returned to you in a memorial urn or wooden photo box.
With friends cremation - your pet is cremated with others beloved pets and no ashes are returned.
We can also provide advice if you would like to bury your pet at home, in accordance with local council guidelines.
Grieving and emotional support
Grieving is a very personal process, and there is no “right” way to feel. For many people, the loss of a pet can be just as painful as losing a family member. Talking to someone who understands - whether it’s a friend, family member, or a member of our team - can help ease the burden.
We also offer access to pet loss support services and bereavement counselling. If you feel you need extra support during this time, please let us know - we’re here to help.
If you have questions, need help making a decision, or simply want someone to talk to, please don’t hesitate to reach out. You’re not alone.
