Pet Export & Travel Advice

If you are thinking of travelling overseas with your four legged family member(s), there are a number of requirements that need to be met before they can leave Australia. We can help you meet the veterinary requirements necessary to do this but you will also need to contact AQIS (Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service) which is part of DAFF (Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry) regarding legal requirements and paperwork involved in exporting your pet.

Dr Mila is export accredited so we can perform export examinations and provide documentation for international companion animal travel (dogs, cats, rabbits). Only an export accredited veterinarian can do this.

Depending on which country you are travelling to there are specific requirements that your pet will have to meet before being allowed to enter that country. You can visit the AQIS website for more information on import requirements for a certain destination country. You are also welcome to call us and leave some details and one of our export vets will contact you with the relevant information.

• Your name and contact details
• Destination country and approximate date of travel
• The species (cat/ dog), number and age of animals that will be travelling.

We can then advise you on the best way to proceed.

Make sure you start preparations early as you’ll need plenty of time to organise your pet for travel. Some countries require animals to receive a Rabies vaccination at least 30 days before travelling. A blood test to check that the vaccination has produced sufficient immunity may also be required and this process can take an extra few weeks.

At the time of travel all animals need to be up to date with their regular vaccinations and been recently treated for internal and external parasites (worming and flea/tick control). We also recommend (if not already a specific requirement for the destination country) that all pets be microchipped.

You will need to make separate arrangements with the airline for the transport carriage of your pet, sometimes this will involve a Pet Transport Company. Your airline or Pet Transport Company will be able to provide more details regarding crate/ container specifications that must be complied with.
