What is Therapeutic Laser Therapy?
Laser is an acronym for “Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation”. Unlike regular light, laser light is a single, concentrated wavelength that penetrates tissues and stimulates healing at a cellular level. This process is known as photobiomodulation. The laser energy promotes cellular regeneration, enhances circulation, and reduces pain signals.
How Does Laser Therapy Work?
Therapeutic lasers emit specific light waves that are absorbed by cells and tissues. This absorption stimulates:
Increased blood circulation
Enhanced cellular repair
Production of growth factors
Reduction of inflammatory chemicals
Blocking of pain pathways
As a result, pets experience reduced inflammation and pain, with faster healing times and improved mobility.
What Conditions Can Laser Therapy Help With?
Laser therapy is beneficial for a wide range of conditions, particularly those involving inflammation, pain, or soft tissue damage, including:
Arthritis and joint inflammation (osteoarthritis)
Muscle strains or tears
Ligament sprains (e.g. cruciate injuries)
Tendon injuries and tendinopathies
Spinal injuries and nerve-related pain
Haematomas and bruising
Bursitis and other inflammatory soft tissue issues
Post-surgical recovery and wound healing
We often recommend laser therapy as part of a broader pain management or rehabilitation plan.
What Are the Risks?
Therapeutic laser is extremely safe, with no known adverse effects in pets when applied correctly. However, there are a few situations where laser therapy might not be suitable (e.g. for certain tumours or over the eyes), and your vet will always discuss this with you prior to treatment if relevant.
What to Expect During a Laser Therapy Session
Your pet’s laser plan will be tailored to their condition during an initial consult.
The session is quick and comfortable—lasting around 2 to 10 minutes depending on the area treated.
Your pet will wear protective goggles (yes, we call them doggles!).
You’re welcome to stay during the treatment—many pets enjoy the gentle warmth and relax during the process.
Some pets may show immediate improvement, while others benefit most with a series of treatments.
